A bid to revive a dead blog

February 7, 2009

Hello world!

I regret to say that SV has been neglecting its blog for what seems to have been a century. Heh. I guess we’ve been caught up too much in this year’s orientation video. Everyone keep up the good work, especially the editors! And for those who are down for filming duty next week, don’t forget to take quality shots (: That’s more important than quantity, especially when we’re on such a tight schedule. Like Hwei Ee said, if there are any clips which you feel are unimportant or uninteresting, delete them when transferring the clips to the computer, or separate them into another folder. Alternatively, you can just key in the more useful/happening/interesting clips into the log and leave the rest be. After all, that’s what the log is there for! :D

Some of you have been asking me when our 1st session with the juniors will be, so here are the details:

1ST SV SESSION

DATE: 23rd Feb (Monday)

TIME: 3 – 6pm

VENUE: To be confirmed

Basically we’re just replacing one of our normal training sessions with SV orientation (: So, do come down to get to know our juniors! And for those who are interested in joining SV, hope to see you there! :D

‘First Take’ at The Substation Theatre

July 11, 2008

On 6th July, I overslept, and missed having dinner with Zhu Chuan and Hwei Ee. Heh.

Well, after I woke up, we all trooped down to Substation Theatre! For all those from Apollo, that’s the place behind which we had our fac outing. yep, set up by the grand-daddy of Singapore arts, Kuo Pao Kun.

‘First Take’ is a free screening of 3 local shorts every first Monday of the month. After the screening of the shorts, there was a dialogue session with the directors of the shorts.

Two of the movies involved imaginary characters (personally I feel it’s like ‘A beautiful mind’ effect? somehow after that movie lots of film material started to contain schizophrenic people with serious hallucinations). The other one was a really short short with no clear ending… I thought it was rather nonsensical at first.

However, the interaction with the directors gave the audience a chance to understand the director’s message behind the show, which I felt was really good. The short I felt was nonsensical had quite an interesting story behind it, which amuses me to no end. (something to do with betrayal and the goddess of mercy haha)

All in all, a really good event for previewing local work from film makers just like ourselves (just with better equipment hah) and learning much!

Sinema: Singapore Shorts Finalists

June 16, 2008

First and foremost, I would really like to thank Cheronne for her excellent directions on how to walk there from Dhoby Ghaut. Writing concise and clear directions on how to navigate from one place to another is not an easy task. But Cheronne did a brilliant job of it. I saved the instructions on my phone… and so we were like doing some treasure hunt or at least it felt something like that – from checkpoint to checkpoint (DG–>Mac’s House–>Hotel Rendevous–>Paradiz–>blahblah..) Until we finally reached SINEMA OLD SCHOOL!!!

Ha, and the place was really like… exotic?

Second and secondmost, the turnout was: Me, Kwan Ki, Wang Yi, Jesslyn, Ernest, Kah Wee. Six people.

It was really really worth the $8. Except one film that we, by common consensus, disliked. Ask around and you’ll know, but I won’t post it there because it isn’t too polite. For the $8 bucks, we also get to meet the director/producer of Kallang RoarCheng Ding An. The following photo explains the rest:

I really liked the type of film he made, amongst others that we’ve watched. In short, he presented and brought a slice of Singapore history to screen in an engaging way, kind of like drama (where most other people would only go as far as to present their research in a dryly monotonous documentary).

Already jealous that you weren’t there? Read on.

They have this membership thing that entitles you to watch all Monday night screenings for FREE.

There is seriously no unspoken catch — umm, well it entails a commitment to their email newsletter. That is all. Registration is free, then you get a card, and with the card u get to catch all the monday night screenings for free.

And I thought. And considered. How would you like our Monday ‘conventional’ CCA afternoon in school to be replaced by a ‘unconventional’ CCA night there at Sinema Old School? I mean, we have this goal this year to make a short film. A truly SV film. What we need is more exposure, especially to local films. If response is sufficiently positive, I believe something can be worked out.

June 30, 2008 – 7:30 pm: Experimental shorts.

I am looking forward to that for our next outing at Sinema. And it is not $4. It is free, as mentioned, with the membership above.

The whole club should sign up for this. The six of us today has already registered and received our “sinema showoff card”. It is on-the-spot registration. So for our next outing, when YOU come along, you can get yours too!

And ‘favourite’ or bookmark this page:

http://www.sinema.sg/oldschool/calendar/

So you know what’s on for each monday night.

(okay this post may not be very comprehensive… but I’m tired so keeping this short and quick)

On this note, please share your opinions with regards to the proposed CCA activity every Monday.

PLEASE respond by commenting to this post.

Cheers!

My Movie Pick of the Year!

June 14, 2008

Ok I knew I just can’t escape from my conscience if I don’t recommend this movie soon.

Our seniors let us watch it last year, before we took over. It has been my favourite movie since. One or two of my batchmates are kinda crazy over it too, not to mention quite a few of my friends outside SV.

The movie is 5 Centimeters Per Second (秒速5センチメートル Byōsoku Go Senchimētoru), directed by Makoto Shinkai. Shinkai is often labelled as the “new” Hayao Miyazaki (co-founder of Ghibli Studios; director of movies such as Spirited Away), and I can say he has huge potential.

The film is drop dead gorgeous, and it’s beautiful (not just graphically). And caution: highly emo content.

Trailer (low quality): Turn up the SOUND!

Some screenshots (large image)

I really appreciate that it is a departure from your ”normal” Jap feature-length animation  – it has no fantasy element whatsoever, no science fiction element whatsoever, but focuses on capturing and expressing the nuances of emotions. It deals about both physical and emotional distance, and it does a great job in bringing through its themes.

If you are into action blockbusters, this may not be for you. This movie is only 1 hour long, but it is 1 hour of masterful emotional characterisation and graphical (and musical) awe. I bought the DVD in Hong Kong last December. A few of my friends bought the Collector’s Edition. It should be out in stores in Singapore currently.

I know that almost the whole film is on youtube (albeit in sections), but trust me, this is one film that deserves to be watched in no less than DVD quality. Hahaha and I got the entire music soundtrack too (for this one, don’t ask how I got it XD).

Ask me if you want to borrow the DVD. Alternatively, the whole DVD has been ripped to the SV room (A415) by our seniors). You can copy it out from there.

Just one last word describing the movie:
Beautiful.

Btw, I hope I have started the ball rolling. If you have any movie you just love and want to recommend to others, please do post!

Handover Photos on Bubbleshare!

May 28, 2008

SV previously had a Flickr account. But we don’t like Flickr because they have a limit of 200 photos and 2 albums. Therefore, I’ve set up a Bubbleshare account, which ( i think) is better.

Management for both the Flickr and Bubbleshare accounts will also be handed-over to the new exco.

SV handover!

May 27, 2008

SV handover was a blast. Everyone had quite a fun time preparing (brewing?), and spilling, tea. Dominic the pyromancer and BBQ IC also conducted interesting experiments on the combustion of noodles, tea leaves, toothpicks and tweezers (luckily the latter did not combust…) LOL XD   Too bad we don’t have photos of his intriguing research…

Yup, so first up today was a video showcasing the work and friendship of the 11th batch of SV members. It has been a fun one year+ with SV as a batch, and personally I am both happy (burden and stress removed) and sad (it’s like… all over… so fast; the journey was fun and i’m glad i made friends in SV). Well, guess bittersweet feelings are normal…

This is the video that was screened (courtesy of ANIMOTO our friend)

After that was the announcement of the new EXCO. Below are the results:
Creative Director: nobody! (due to lack of suitable applicants)
Public Relations Manager: Jesslyn
Welfare Manager: Cheronne
Resource Manager: Huayi
Technical Director: Priscilla
Manpower Manager: Lynne
Secretary-Treasurer: Kwan Ki
Vice-President: Hwei Ee
President: Grace

Here is the jobscopes (revised since the powerpoint we presented when you applied for EXCO). Note, do be flexible still; this jobscope list is mainly a guideline to organise manpower and help in specialisation. Here is the final member list.

Leon made a good point in mentioning that your batch is the first batch in quite a while that the EXCO does not make up 50% or more of the active club membership. For those who did not get a post, don’t be disappointed; there are many other avenues you can take to shine in SV (eg. volunteer to be project director for projects like Orientation video – haha but “credentials” of dedication and responsibility are required). Yup!

Be brave and aim high, as I can safely say that, as of now, the number of active members in your batch is 18, nearly 3 times that of my batch. Keep everyone involved, and I hope that your passion in these areas and commitment to the club will continue. The passion and commitment is a key strength of your club – maximise the potential here.

And don’t worry about the upcoming year, the most important thing is to enjoy every leg of your journey in SV! One year is really short, so make best use of it to have fun! Do make an effort to make some friends within the club within the end of this year, because it’s either now or never; next year all of you will be seriously mired down with a lot of clashing commitments.

Ok this sounds so much like a super long and boring speech, and I shall end here. But the above are things we seniors learnt from our time in SV, and we hope that the points will be useful.

Below are some documents that you may need:
SV logo (Old) (New)

SV Mailing List – for convenient emailing, just copy out the paragraph of email addresses
SV contact list – includes many other members who have quit already; you should have them in ur emails (this file have been deleted from the net because of the sensitive information it contains)
SV Photo List – in case you have problems remembering faces of your batchmates.

30 week plan template (you will be asked to do it near the end of this year)
ICube Submission template (you will be told to submit something for term 3 this year). We settled terms 1 and 2 already, and got second most innovative CCA out of like 37 for term 1 =)
Receipt to be issued to clients.

Phew that was a lot of documents! I will pass Kwan Ki ALL the accumulated documents (including the .pdfs for sv logo, cip hour template, etcetc) by cd/dvd soon (stupid wordpress does not allow .txt, .pdf and .xls file types…). If you need the passwords for various SV accounts (eg. blog, youtube, gmail, flickr, animoto, school sv room comp, src comp), approach Hwei Ee or Grace.

That’s about it, do contact us if you need help. We seniors will still be glad to help although we have handed over already. I’ll be back with photos of the handover shortly. Thanks!

Btw, do comment if you feel like it! (eg. for harapan’s video). Click on the link to the top right corner of each post. Let’s make this blog more active (we will be releasing the password and username to everyone in the club so everyone can post – eg. about your favourite recent movie haha)

Harapan’s Video Completed!

May 18, 2008

Hi all,
This is the final version of Harapan’s Publicity Video. Sorry to those who asked to be involved in the production process – yet again we had to rush for deadlines and cannot fully involve all of you.

The video was filmed in greenscreen (greenlight, to be precise). During editing, I applied 9-10 effects on each clip (overkill! haha). The video turned out to be surprisingly successful, so much so I received 6 comments and 4 5-star ratings within one night on Youtube (a lot due to Harapan’s skills haha). It has also been posted by a flourisher on his blog already and will be screened during Harapan’s performance (Harapan.Magic!) today. Cheers to SV for another video well done!

Go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nISuHYanruM if you want to see the comments, etc.

Blue/Greenscreen session materials

May 18, 2008

Hi all,
For those who have missed it (which basically refers to everyone except Wang Yi, Grace and Guo Cong), this is the powerpoint I used to teach greenscreen. The part about what to do in Premiere may be quite technical, so you may want to read it in detail only when you need to do greenscreen for your projects. As those who missed the visit to the room and the hands-on, you may want arrange with the art department to go there on another day and let the three who went show you (when they teach, they will understand more too).

The powerpoint:  Link

On a lighter note, Wang Yi kindly posed as the model for our greenscreen hands-on. The following photos demonstrate the psychological effect of being surrounded by 4 strong white lights for like one hour.

LOL. -.-”
Cheers!
